Small interstitial cave at Fondal de Valldellós, in Mediona, with a 9 m gallery and archaeological interest.

Characteristics

Location

Cova Barramon is located in the NW sector of l'Agulla de Valldellós, a short distance from Cova de la Boira and Cova de la Rasa.

The Fondal de Valldellós was formed by the collapse of a limestone cliff that has created an exceptional chaos of blocks, among which a multitude of small concavities have formed, of little speleological value but of archaeological interest.

The whole spot is dominated by two singular elements, l'agulla de Valldellós, a monolith that presides over the hollow, and el pas dels lladres o de la guineu, which, forming a concealed channel, allows the cliff to be easily overcome.

Archaeologically characterised as an eremitic-cultural cave nucleus (la Cova), it is a spot resulting from the decomposition and retreat of the cliff, where a heap of blocks creates a small labyrinth of passages and hollows.

Description

Morphology

Short gallery 9 m long that remains closed shortly afterwards.

Progression

One enters through a short ramp and a small step among the accumulation of blocks, then continues among them in a slightly ascending direction until it remains closed shortly afterwards.

Other details

Although conditions do not appear favourable for permanent troglodytic habitation, the fact is that numerous pieces from prehistoric times (Neolithic and Bronze) and from the early Christian period have been collected within the small "almost" caves that open beneath the blocks.

History

The Fondal de Valldellós is already mentioned in 1928 in an itinerary of the Centre Excursionista Rafel de Casanova (at that time it was called Fondal de Clivelleres).

In 1956, Pere Giró mentions a donation of archaeological material made by Josep Lloret to the Museum of Vilafranca del Penedès.

But it is not until 1975 that three members of the Agrupació Excursionista Talaia (Vilanova i la Geltrú) (J. Alegret, M. Pàmies and J. Virella) rediscover the spot, and from 1978 until 1986 the area was the subject of important archaeological work by the Associació d'Estudis Científics i Culturals de Mediona.
