Characteristics

Location

From the C17 road towards Puigcerdà we enter the village of Sant Quirze de Besora at the traffic-light junction. We must cross over the bridge over the river Ter and at the end of the bridge, turn left onto the BV5227 road. We will cross the railway line and continue for about 7 kms., until we reach Santa Maria de Besora. Almost at the end of the straight stretch that crosses the village, we will find on the left the sign indicating "to Ripoll via Llaés". We must take this narrow cemented track, which is in good enough condition to drive with a car. You must be alert since the bends are very tight and we constantly find steep ups and downs. After covering 3.5 kms. we will reach the coll de Beví; before reaching the coll we will find a track on the left, which we must follow, leaving on the left the turn-offs of the Beví Gros and further on that of the Beví Xic; further on the track turns towards the N, and on this stretch we will find signs that will lead us to the entrance of the great fissure where the blowholes are located.

The two entrances are located a few metres above blowhole no. 5 of Beví.

Description

Morphology

These are two cavities joined by a small pit (see section b-b' on the survey). It has a total length of 52 metres and the lowest point is at -9 metres depth relative to the upper entrance. The upper cavity begins with a boulder ramp with a vertical drop of 5 metres, continuing afterwards along a gallery 9 metres long by 2 metres wide, also full of boulders. Halfway along the gallery and on the N wall, a narrow passage of 0.50 metres leads us to the small pit that connects with the lower cavity. Returning to the entrance ramp, on the right we find a passage between boulders 8 metres long.

The lower cavity begins at the bottom of a small doline and is formed by a single gallery of triangular section.

History

The first records of visits to any of the cavities located inside this great fissure correspond to Dr. Francesc Español, carried out in 1934 for biospeleological purposes.

In 1965 the Grup Espeleològic Terra i Mar (GETIM) of Sabadell explored the avenc dels Tigres; the avenc del TIM, the avenc Besora and the avenc del Vent.

Later the ERE of the CEC between 1977 and 1980 carried out a meticulous inventory of the cavities located in this fissure, which would be published in the magazine Espeleòleg no. 34-35.

During 1979 the Centre Espeleològic Cervelló carried out the exploration of various cavities of this fissure, with the aim that they be published in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya (Borràs-Miñarro-Talavera); this led to giving a new designation to some cavities.

We, the EspeleoÍndex team, have considered it more appropriate to use the designation of the cavities made by the members of the ERE-CEC, since it is a more complete joint work. This same line regarding designation has been used by Jordi de Valles in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya (4).
