Characteristics

Location

From the C17 road in the direction of Puigcerdà we will enter the village of Sant Quirze de Besora at the traffic-light junction. We must cross over the bridge over the river Ter and at the end of the bridge, turn left onto the BV5227 road. We will cross the railway line and continue for about 7 kms., until we reach Santa Maria de Besora. Almost at the end of the straight stretch that crosses the village, we will find on the left-hand side the sign indicating "a Ripoll per Llaés". We must take this narrow cemented track, which is in good enough condition to be driven with a car. You must be alert since the bends are very tight and we constantly find steep ups and downs. After covering 3.5 kms. we will reach the coll de Beví; before reaching the coll we will find a track on the left, we must follow it, leaving on the left the turn-offs of the Beví Gros and further on that of the Beví Xic; further on the track turns towards the N; on this stretch we will find signs that will lead us towards the entrance of the great fissure where the bufadors are found.

The avenc dels Tigres is located at the W end, of the S lateral branch, while the mouth of the avenc del TIM is found 20 metres to the NW, after the two mouths of the avenc de Besora.

Description

Morphology

The mouth of the avenc del TIM is the one found at the greatest height; it places us in a gallery 10 metres long where, by means of a small 4-metre pit, we access a gallery situated perpendicularly (E-W). Following this gallery in a W direction, we will reach a small pit of one and a half metres, where the cavity ends, level -9.5 metres. Situated again at the base of the 4-metre pit, in the opposite direction some large blocks wedged in the walls separate us from the avenc dels Tigres.

The mouth of the avenc dels Tigres is found at -1.5 metres with respect to the avenc del TIM; this gives access to a ramp followed by a step that places us at -5.5 metres; a few metres away are the blocks that separate the two pits.

History

The first mentions of visits to any of the cavities located inside this great fissure correspond to Dr. Francesc Español, carried out in 1934 for biospeleological purposes.

In 1965 the Grup Espeleològic Terra i Mar (GETIM) of Sabadell explored the avenc dels Tigres; the avenc del TIM, the avenc Besora and the avenc del Vent.

Later the ERE of the CEC between the years 1977 and 1980 carried out a meticulous inventory of the cavities located in this fissure that would be published in the magazine Espeleòleg nº 34-35.

During 1979 the Centre Espeleològic Cervelló carried out the exploration of various cavities of this fissure, with the aim that they be published in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya (Borràs-Miñarro-Talavera); this led to giving a new denomination to some cavities.

We, the EspeleoÍndex team, have considered it more appropriate to use the denomination of the cavities made by the members of the ERE-CEC, since it is a more complete joint work. This same line as regards the denomination has been used by Jordi de Valles in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya (4).
