Characteristics

Location

The Cargolaire shelters are located in Calders (Moianès). To get there, from the roundabout before entering the village of Calders, take the B-124 road that leads to Monistrol de Calders. For the first 300 m you can leave the car in a widening and continue on foot along a descending path that leaves from the right side of the road. You pass beside a monumental holm oak (Alzina de l'Erola) and continue descending to a fork; take the right-hand path, which leads to a cliff known as the Roques dels Gitanos, where the Cargolaire shelters are. First you see shelter no. 1 and, a few metres further on and above, no. 2.

Description

Morphology

Shelter no. 1 is a built shelter where some dry-stone walls can still be seen; it has a length of 74 m by 7 m deep and a maximum height of 6 m. Shelter no. 2 has a length of 23 m and a depth of 6 m; the height is 10 m, but it has two levels: the first level is 4 m high and the second is 6 m, the total height.

History

These cavities were inhabited from the 40s by a man who came from a village in the north of Castelló. He lived in the shelter for 20 years; the people of Calders called him en Miquel de les Roques. He built a dwelling inside the shelter; basically, to survive he made a living searching for snails, which he then sold at nearby markets. He lived in the cave until he died and was much loved by the people of the village.
