Location

Conglomerate rock shelter located in the bed of the riera de Milany (Vidrà).

We will set out from Santa Maria de Besora along the Vidrà road; after kilometre 9 we will take a turn-off to the right, a track that leads us to the coll de Barreto. Here we will find a crossroads: we will continue along the left-hand path and then the right-hand one, which will lead us to the coll del Forn and then descend to the riera de Milany. Once we have crossed the riera, we will leave the car to go up the torrent. When we find the first tributary on the left we will continue along the right until we find the waterfall and the rock shelter, very visible in the middle of the riera.

Description

Morphology

The rock shelter is located right in the middle of the riera de Milany, between a double torrent waterfall. First we find the 6.50m waterfall and right above it the balma del Gitano, with maximum dimensions of 36m in width by 10m in depth and a height of 3.50m.

Speleothems

With low temperatures and the riera active, ice falls form, forming columns, on the tufa.

Hydrology

Right above the rock shelter we find a waterfall with a drop of 9.50m where the waters of the riera de Milany plunge down.

Inside it we find small gullies from infiltrations from the ceiling.

History

Rock shelter unpublished speleologically. Catalogued by members of the GEB in August 2019.
