Balma del Marrà, in Pinell de Solsonès, is 25 metres wide by 8 metres deep, with a small lithogenic formation and a spring that can dry up.

Characteristics

Location

On the C-26 road towards Bassella, on reaching kilometre 96 you must turn left, continue for 1.5 km until you reach a crossroads where we continue to the left towards Sant Tirs. Here we take the track on the left and go down towards the bottom of the valley between crop fields and woods. Near the barranc de Pinell we find on the right the sign for the "Balma del Marrà".

Description

Morphology

The rock shelter is 25 metres wide by 8 metres deep.

Speleothems

Speleologically speaking it is of no interest, but one can highlight a small lithogenic formation made up of a stalactite and a stalagmite with a “gour”. The stalactite is separated by some 20cm from the stalagmite.

Hydrology

On one side, there is a cool spring, which in times of drought can dry up. The ravine passes above and, when the water leaps, a small spectacle can be seen.

Progression

We follow the path that crosses the torrent bed and, through a corridor of box trees, we reach the bauma del Marrà.

History

This rock shelter had already been used to hide livestock in times of war. We find it signposted on “la ruta de les Mentides”, which begins at Pinell.
