Characteristics

Location

From the NW edge of the village of Terrades and on the right-hand side of the road, a track leads off towards a series of cultivated fields and a farm; when this track turns right, a path appears ahead that must be followed in the direction of a nearby cliff, where the cave is found.

Description

Morphology

A narrow entrance between blocks gives way to a sloping gallery that after a few metres turns sharply to the right and continues descending. At its end point it turns again and through a passage with a lower vault one enters the final gallery, which soon regains height and has a flat floor. In the last stretch it is subdivided into two superimposed conduits that give rise to an upper level.

History

After a visit to the Bora Major, visited by Dr. Zariquiey in 1917, his son Ricardo Zariquiey Álvarez, accompanied by Mr. Bofill, visited it again on 12 September 1923. On returning to Terrades they were informed of the existence of another cavity, the Bauma de Bruguer, unpublished until then, which they did not hesitate to explore straight away. Besides collecting Speonomus, in the last small chamber they found a specimen of a carabid that from the first moment they suspected might be an exceptional find. It was sent to Professor Jeannel and a few days later he communicated to them with great enthusiasm that it was a great discovery, almost a relic, and he did not hesitate to dedicate it to them: Zariquieya troglodytes Jeann.

The cave has been visited periodically and especially by all Catalan biospeleologists.
