Characteristics

Location

Located at the turnoff of the road that goes to Olivella, coming from Sant Pere de Ribes, just to the right there is a path that descends to a vineyard. At the northern end of the vineyard one takes a narrow trail very overgrown with vegetation, which descends to the bed of the riera de Begues. Once at the bed, go upstream about 50 metres and on the left slope (right going up) a narrow trail comes out that climbs suddenly and at about 20 metres we find a pit with a large olive tree beside it. Continue climbing about 20 metres more along the line of maximum slope until reaching a cart track. Continue to the right along the cart track making a slight descent about 100 metres. At this point there is a wild olive tree on the same left edge of the track. From this point, a faint trail climbs along the line of maximum slope to the foot of a small cliff, where the mouth of the pit is. From the pit to the wild olive tree there is a height difference of about 20 metres.

Description

Morphology

Mouth of 0.5 x 0.8 metres that communicates by a short descending ramp with a first pit of a little more than 6 metres, at the bottom of which (Sala dels Cranis) the point of maximum depth is reached. The second pit of the cavity is parallel to the main one and has a depth of a little more than 4 metres where it ends (Sala dels Rocs).

History

Known since time immemorial by the people of the area. It seems that in the past it had a lower mouth that was covered during the works carried out in some old terraced fields. In 1959, J. Bellmunt, of the Museu V. Balaguer de Vilanova i la Geltrú, carried out an archaeological excavation, collecting material ranging from the Bronze I to the Iron Age. The toponym that gives its name to the pit has had variations over time. First we saw it written as Monàs, later Montnàs (which is how it appears painted at the mouth of the pit) and currently on the ICGC map and Gazetteer it appears as Monars.
