Characteristics

Location

The cavity is located in Sant Pere de Ribes (Garraf). Entering Sitges via the C-31 road, we will leave it at the roundabout at km 164 until reaching the carretera de les Costes, where we will turn right along the camí dels Capellans and then right again along the camí de la Fita, until crossing under the C-32 motorway where we will find a roundabout. Here we will take the road leading to the Mas Alba development, where the road takes the name avinguda de Sitges. We will continue along it until turning right onto the avinguda del Mas d'Alba. We will turn right along the carrer de la Fita and at the end of it we will turn left along the carrer del Segre to leave the development. After the last house we will continue 300 metres and leave the car. The cavity is located 30 metres to our right, just where the ridge begins its descent.

Description

Morphology

The cavity opens to the outside through four aligned entrances separated from each other by 4 metres. The one located furthest E gives access to a bell-shaped pit of 3.4 metres. We can easily descend through the third or fourth entrance (the second is quite overgrown with vegetation) to position ourselves at the start of a small chamber 13 metres long on a gentle slope and lit by the four entrances of the cavity. The blocks have been removed from the floor and placed at the sides to facilitate, we assume, archaeological research. From this chamber, beneath the second entrance, a narrow outward branch descends just over 1 metre. A narrow passage located at the back of the chamber, caused by a stalagmitic column, places us in a small chamber 5 metres high, at the end of which we will find on the floor a narrow passage with signs of being the object of a desobstruction, the point where the cavity ends.

History

The first mention of this cavity is by M. Faura i Sans in his Recull (1909), who already calls it Avenc del Mas de Mossèn Alba. The first record is published in 1968 by members of the GE Talaia, who call it Avenc-cova de Mossèn Alba. It seems that someone, at some point, has also called it Cova-avenc del Maset d'en Quadres. On the ICC map, in a very nearby area, a reference appears to la Cova d'en Quadres, which is possibly this same cavity. It has been excavated and has yielded material corresponding to the Late Bronze Age (-1200 / -650) and Early Roman Empire (14 / 192).
