Characteristics

Location

On the track that goes from Begues to the Plana Novella, on reaching the Corral d'en Romagosa, we will follow the path that from the corral descends to the riera del Carxol. Once at the riera, we will go up it for 130 metres, where we will follow on the right the path of the Vall del Teix. After about 600 metres we will find a fork; we will follow the right-hand one that goes uphill (the left-hand one goes to a small water weir). We will follow the path for 600 metres more, in which we will reach the crossroads of the Vall del Teix with the riera de la Morella, which reaches us from the right (hydrographic left). From the confluence with the aforementioned riera de la Morella, it is necessary to go up it along its bed for about 280 metres and the pit is about 10 metres above the left thalweg (on the right according to the direction of travel).

Description

Morphology

The entrance pit, bell-shaped, is 24 metres deep and at one end of its base it communicates through a window with the second vertical of the cavity. This one, with a drop of just over 13 metres, continues through an inclined conduit that leads to a new vertical of 13 metres more. At its bottom, at the end of a small chamber, a new pit begins, also of 13 metres, which reaches the classic bottom of the cavity at 70 metres from the surface.

At the upper part of the last pit begins the so-called Via Nico, which can be accessed through the ceiling of a chamber located at the beginning of this pit or through a crawlway that begins at the upper part of this chamber. If we follow the aforementioned crawlway, we will find a small step that leads to a blind pit, but if we go up the pit a few metres, we reach a phreatic gallery that, through a small step, leads to a chamber located above the pit and to the other access of the route. Returning to the beginning of this route and going up about 5 metres, shortly before the “fus” we will find a joint that communicates with a pit of 12 metres and at its bottom a very narrow passage, later cleared, that gives way to the last pit of the route and where the point of maximum depth is reached.

History

Known by a shepherd from Begues (“Tirlo”) who, from the Pla del Bruc, indicated the location to Lluís Muntan, telling him that a juniper grew at the entrance (botanically speaking at the entrance there was a cade juniper, very similar to the juniper, since junipers grow at higher altitude and in Garraf there are none, but the shepherd's denomination was respected to name the new pit). Members of GES – CMB carried out the first exploration in February 1956. (Information provided by Lluís Muntan).

It is not until 1980 that, on a routine trip, members of GERS – AE Muntanya discover the Via Nico and carry out a curious, to say the least, three-dimensional survey. Much later, in 1998, also people from GERS are able to overcome the final narrowness of the aforementioned Via Nico and explore the final pit.
