Characteristics

Location

From the Castellón village of Fredes, take the forest track that leads to Mont Caro. Once you reach the turnoff (coll de la Creu) towards the small Teruel village of Beseit, continue towards Caro and about 500 metres further on, at a sharp bend in the track, a turnoff to the left appears, closed with a chain, which must be taken. About 240 metres further on, to the right, there is a very faint track that had been used to extract firewood and which descends slightly. After following it for about 500 metres there is the head of a ravine; on its right-hand slope and a few metres to the right of the track is the hidden entrance of the pit.

Coordinates quite different from those given by the original authors of the published record. Those given here are the ones provided later by the same authors and are entirely reliable.

Description

Morphology

Entrance 2 x 0.9 metres that connects with a small shaft of just over 3 metres, which leads into a ramp gallery that descends slightly to the point of maximum depth, passing some rough areas with blocks.

History

Known to some inhabitants of the village of Fredes who accompanied members of the Espeleo Club Castelló during their campaign in the Tinença de Benifassà area. They themselves carried out its first exploration on 10 October 1999.

According to the author of the article, they located the cavity with GPS on the 1:25000 IGN map, which does not correspond over much of the distance with the position given when transferring it to the 1:5000 ICC map. Nevertheless they used the toponymy of that same map, which we have respected, but let it be recorded that on the ICC map the corral del Quixo appears as corral d'Urquisso.
