Description
Morphology
A small mouth, with clear signs of epigean erosion, gives way to a first aerial shaft of 12.7 metres, somewhat bell-shaped and completely covered in concretion. The plan is structured along an N20O–S20E joint, the same orientation as the outer valley. The floor is covered by a flowstone with a steep slope towards the SE, ending in a small 4-metre shaft obstructed by small debris. However, through two small windows it connects with a fusiform little chamber, at level – 22. Above the small shaft rises a chimney with an abundant reconstruction process that communicates with the entrance shaft through a concretion-covered crawlway located at level – 5. On the N side a shaft opens, 15.8 metres deep and about 4 metres wide. Its plan is smaller since it is divided by a partition that separates it from a narrow lateral concavity with which it connects through three openings. On the SW side, climbing about 4 metres, you reach a heavily concretion-covered little chamber and 3 metres higher there is a 7-metre shaft that leads to the final part of the pit, exactly at level – 29.8.
Hydrology
Genetically, the oldest part of the pit is the one corresponding to the small shaft that reaches – 22 metres, located in former times directly beneath the torrent bed. The present mouth seems to have acted as a direct swallow hole, although not for very long, since the shifting of the thalweg and its excavation left it hanging on one side. The terminal shaft is more recent and is currently located beneath the torrent, from which it receives the seepage.
History
First explored on 14 August 1923 during the first of the campaigns in the Garraf massif, led by Rafael Amat i Carreras. As he himself explains, the pit had been found by an outsider from Begues on the day of the feast of Sant Roc. Amat's chronicle is accompanied by one of the excellent drawings (section and plan of the pit) made by his cousin Gabriel Amat i Pagès. It is one of the classic cavities of Garraf. We update the record (May 2016) including a note on subterranean fauna provided by Floren Fadrique and take the opportunity to attach some more surveys of the cavity.
