Characteristics

Location

You must go up the road that leads from the Campgràs to the radio installations, specifically to the one at elevation 591 (where the building with the "ball" is). At the last left-hand bend, before reaching the access gate, you must head N10W, first across the flat ground where you will leave the avenc dels Tres on your left, and a little further on you will come to the avenc de la Discòrdia; once past this, you begin to descend the slope following some cairns that marked a path, now vanished among the vegetation, for about 200 metres. Once you reach the streambed, the cave entrance is about five metres above the bed on its left bank.

Description

Morphology

The 4x1.5-metre entrance is blocked by wedged boulders, leaving an opening at the bottom through which you enter. It consists of a 74-metre shaft with small ledges at -12 metres, at -45 metres and at -51 metres, with some impassable lateral shafts found at -27 metres. At -74 metres a final, narrower shaft 10 metres deep opens up.

History

Discovered by the rector of Begues, Mn. Nicolau, on one of his excursions through the Garraf uplands. He accompanied Rafael Amat i Carreras and his companions on 20 July 1925, who proceeded to make the first exploration. The rector himself took part in it and, as discoverer, named the cave after the patron saint of Begues, although it seems the full name would be avenc de Sant Cristòfol dels Beguetans. They calculated that the pit reached 105 metres in depth and nothing more was ever heard of it. Since the third part of 'Sota el massís de Garraf' remained practically unpublished until 1972, when it was published in the magazine Espeleòleg, practically nobody knew about the cave.

It was not until 30 years later that members of the GES-CMB (L. Muntan and JM. Anglada) contacted Rafael Amat and managed to copy the typescript of his last campaign in the Garraf which, curiously, shows some variations in the text compared with the one he handed in years later for publication in Espeleòleg.

With the scant references in the text about the location of the pit ("in the direction of Sitges and near that of Jacques and the Campgràs", which incidentally does not appear in the published memoir), three members of the GES – CMB: Eduard Auqué, Àngel Anglada and Lluís Muntan decided to go in search of it and managed to explore it on the hot 25 July 1957.

A few months later, possibly in 1958, members of the SES - CE Puigmal, accompanied by Quico del Mas Roig de Begues (actually named Josep), explored it again and, thinking it was a new pit, renamed it avenc del Cisco (in honour of their companion). During the exploration, a falling stone amputated part of a finger of Emili Sabaté's hand.
