A 14-metre-deep pit at the Serrat de la Morella (Begues), difficult to locate and heavily masked by vegetation.

Characteristics

Location

A cavity that is difficult to locate, heavily masked by vegetation. The pit is located on the left slope of an unnamed torrent that descends from the Serrat de la Morella, between the Puig Ginebró (la Bola) and the hill of the antennas, towards the fondo del Bruc. From the door of the telecommunications station located on the Puig Ginebró, the pit is located in direction 9º at 300 linear metres on the map.

The recommended approach is to set out from the well-known avenc de la Discòrdia, head towards the torrent on the right and descend it along its right slope, which is easier to traverse. When we reach approximately the 520-metre level, we will have to cross the ravine and locate the entrance on a rocky promontory located some 5 metres above the streambed. All of it surrounded by thick vegetation. The approach can also be made from the avenc del Serrat de la Morella.

Description

Morphology

An entrance of 1X1.17 metres, easily down-climbable in two sections of r-1.60 and r-1.40. In this first small pit, shortly after, we observe a parallel pit with an entry window of 0.25X0.76 metres; this connects at its base with the other entrance at the base of the access pit. This other entrance is 0.48X0.30 metres.

We will descend through a crawlway with a turn to the right of about three metres. Here we find a small descending corridor profusely decorated with formations; in this passage 1.60 metres high by 0.90 metres wide, after advancing one and a half metres one reaches the head of a pit of -9.20 metres. At the end of the passage and beside the mouth of the pit, we observe a small impenetrable hole, which deepens 1 metre and connects with the aforementioned pit.

The mouth of this pit is 0.70X0.90 metres wide, although it immediately becomes a narrow passage that soon widens. Having descended this P-9, we observe a small parallel pit that begins at about three metres and connects at two points to the main pit, one of them not penetrable. The pit widens slightly and has walls covered with lithogenic formations. The base of the pit is about 3X1.50 metres, reaching the maximum level of -14 metres.

As its first explorers explain, somewhat higher up we find a hole with an interesting air current. It is possible that it communicates with the wall of the torrent.

History

Cavity discovered and explored on 31 March 1974 by the ERE of the AEC, but it went unnoticed, most probably because it was discovered after Joan Borràs published the three volumes of the “Catálogo Espeleológico del Macizo de Garraf”. For many years it was searched for by members of various Clubs without success; finally, based on the indications provided by Francesc Ximelis, one of the first explorers, on 22 February 2015, Carles Miranda and Enric Porcel (GEB) managed to locate the cavity.
