Avenc de Pic d'espies

Travessia de 37 metres de desnivell, a Montanissell (Coll de Nargó)

Coll de Nargó • Alt Urgell53m37m

A 37-metre descent in Montanissell (Coll de Nargó), with an upper entrance in a doline, a circular shaft and an N-S fissure.

Characteristics

Location

From Organyà take the road that, passing through the Font Bordonera, climbs to Montanissell. On arriving there, we will take a track on the right that goes up the barranc de la Muntanya. Once past the gorge and within sight of Can Pitarell, one must climb the ridge in an E direction, where the Puig d'Espies is. The entrance of the cavity, defended by a thicket of box and brambles and with no path leading to it, is a few metres from the cliff of the S slope, at an elevation of 1320 m.a.s.l. The lower entrance opens onto a terrace at a considerable height above the track.

Description

Morphology

The upper entrance is a doline located on the sloping side of the crag. Through its lower lip one descends down a ramp until reaching the dome of a circular shaft about 6 metres in diameter and 7 metres deep. At its base, also quite steep, a wide and long fissure running N-S awaits us, 28 metres above its floor, which is flat, and it opens to the outside in a porch about 10X3 metres.

History

From a graffiti found inside the cavity, we know that it was very probably visited in 1984 by the Secció Excursionista de l'Ateneu Castellarenc (SEAC); from 1987 this entity became the Centre Excursionista Castellar. What we do not know is whether they managed to make the complete traverse of the cavity or whether they only visited the lower part corresponding to the cave, which is where the graffiti is.

In 1989 the GERS de l'AE Muntanya fully explored the cavity and made it known under the name avenc de Pic d'Espies.

The companions of the Espeleodijous visited it at the end of 2016; they spoke with the people of the Pitarell who know the hole, but not by the name avenc, since this is not a toponym of the area. They also indicated that the Puig d'Espies (not Pic) is quite far from there. The companions of the Espeleodijous point out that it would be more appropriate to cite the cavity with the name “Pou del Puig d'Espies”.
