Characteristics

Location

Following the track that leaves from the paved road of the Pla de Sots d'Óssos and heads towards the Pla d'Ardenya, once past the avenc Gran de les Alzines and before starting the descent towards the Creu d'Ardenya, we will find the parking area and a path on the left; following it in a northerly direction, in about a hundred metres it brings us to a doline where remains of an archaeological intervention carried out in 2007 can still be seen. The entrances of the cavity open on both sides of a small elevation in the E part of the doline.

It can also be reached from Vallirana from the Mas de les Fonts urbanisation and the track that climbs to the Pla d'Ardenya.

Curiously, this cavity was for a long time erroneously catalogued in the municipality of Vallirana, due to the peculiarities of the territorial boundaries; the whole area of influence of the doline in which both this and the other two nearby cavities are found (Av. De la Carena de les Alzines and Av. Nou de les Alzines) belong to the municipal term of Begues.

Description

Morphology

Currently (2024) the cavity has three access entrances.

If we position ourselves in the S part of the doline next to the Avenc Nou de les Alzines and looking towards the N, on the right of the doline we will find the classic entrance as always; through this entrance one accesses a shaft of -8 metres which drops into a shaft of -22 metres that reaches -30 metres at a wide base where on its E side we find a couple of ascending conduits.

On the left of the doline we find the other two entrances; the nearest one leads to the platform located at -22.9 metres which is a few metres before reaching the bottom of the chamber, but this access is narrower, besides finding some unstable blocks there. On the other hand, the furthest entrance presents a direct shaft down to this platform, which practically links with a narrow shaft of about 10 metres in depth; at the base of this shaft, a short ramp in the middle of a narrow passage brings us to the deepest point of the cavity.

The vertical drop of the cavity is -34.5 metres, while the length is more interpretative. If we count the length from the upper entrance to the end of the cavity, this is 134 metres. If to this length we add the length of the other two access shafts, then the length is 185 metres. If we also add the shafts that have been climbed, then the length is 258 metres.

Speleothems

In the upper part of the canopies and on the right side we find a narrow passage which, once passed, brings us to an ascending ramp that leads to the wide Sala dels Templers, named thus for a curious cross-shaped formation on one of the walls. In the E part of the chamber we find an ascending shaft, the dome of which is located at a height of +23 metres. On the NW side of the chamber we find another dome that rises about +9 metres, while on the W side of the chamber we find a steep ramp; at the upper part of this a new dome rises up to +21 metres.

At the base of the upper part of the ramp we find two crawls that end after a few metres, but one of them has an ascending shaft of +11 metres.

Progression

On one side of the narrow ramp we find a short passage that brings us to the sala Fantasma; here we find a kind of canopies that have been placed on the steep ascending ramp to prevent infiltration water from dragging the mud from the walls and blocking the access passage again. This chamber has a height up to the dome of +23 metres.

History

The first exploration was carried out in 1962 by the GES del CMB.

It is not very clear when the first exploration that gave access to the current Sala Fantasma was made, but we have evidence of explorations carried out in the late sixties.

Between 2006 and 2007 a group of archaeologists from the Grup de Recerca del Quaternari del SERP de la Universitat de Barcelona, who also carried out similar work at the avenc Gran de les Alzines, with the help of an excavator completely emptied the doline where the entrance of the pit opens, razing all the vegetation for quite a few metres around. This causes the opening of two new entrances that are left in a rather unstable situation.

On a visit carried out in December 2009 it is observed that one of the entrances has been covered by the sediments that had accumulated around the doline and that have been dragged by the rain. On another visit carried out in June 2011 it is confirmed that the sediments dragged by the rain have definitively sealed the two entrances opened by the archaeologists' work; likewise the doline is gradually recovering its former appearance. During the following years the only access to the cavity is again through the primitive entrance, although its original appearance has been quite modified.

Following the unblocking work carried out in recent years at the nearby avenc Nou de les Alzines, initially opened by the aforementioned archaeologists, members of the EspeleoCorb in 2018 unblock again the other two entrances of the avenc de les Alzines.

After 14 years without being able to access it, finally on 16 January 2022 access is achieved again to the Sala Fantasma (previously it had been referred to as Pou de la Revolució). The floor of this chamber has been covered with a butyl rubber sheet, to prevent the entry of infiltrations from filling it with mud again and settling it anew.

In 2023 a new unblocking at the Sala Fantasma allows access to a new large chamber, it is the Sala dels Templers, the name given to it from a curious cross-shaped formation on the wall.

The exploration of this new chamber has made possible the carrying out of various climbs, some of which end a few metres from the outside.

In the unblocking, exploration and various attempts at surveying the cavity that did not come to fruition, many people belonging to various Groups have participated, among whom we can mention Joaquim Castaño (†), Francesc Romera, Pedro Valdepeñas, Lluís Domingo, Pere Miralles, Jaume Clemente, Francesc Alarcón, Manel Peloche, Jordi Coma, Xavier Galiana, Laura Besolí, David Prat, Judith Bertolí, Subi Gudanyol, Gorka Basterra, Tomás Garcia, Sandra Oliveras, Mikel Rodriguez, Jordi Mire, Laura Moreno, Alan Ruiz, Javi Pardo, Susana del Valle, Carlos Miranda, Ignasi López, Josep Subirana, Xavier Aliaga, Cesar Jiménez, Jordi Navarro, Montse Mañosa, Brauli Torres, Xavier Ruiz, and Manuel Ruiz.

In January 2024 Juli Serrano (SIE-CEA) and Francesc Rubinat (ERE-CEC) carry out a new survey of the cavity.
