Small 9 m deep pit in Vandellòs, Baix Camp, also known as avenc d'en Xispa, with a narrow entrance and a 4 m vertical drop.

Characteristics

Location

From the Vandellòs to Tivissa road (C-44) at km 13.5 (shortly before the coll de Fatxes), a paved track leaves to the left leading to the mas de Genessies and to Gavadà. About 700 metres from its start and shortly before crossing under the high-tension line, a track leaves to the right ending at the mas de Sanxo or de Jovara. Shortly before and after some zigzags it climbs to the ridge that rises to the Punta de Jovara. At the same col of the ridge one must follow it in a NW direction and a hundred metres further on is the pit, on the same dividing line between the municipalities of Tivissa and Vandellòs. Very approximate coordinates.

Description

Morphology

Narrow entrance followed by a 4 metre vertical drop. It continues horizontally for a dozen metres in a SSE direction, where progress is made impossible by the accumulation of blocks. Some small openings in the floor allow one to reach, between blocks, the level of -9. Typical detachment fissure along the N30O-S30E joint.

History

According to information from our friend Floren Fadrique (July 2016), the avenc de la Cabra is the same as the one that has been catalogued as avenc d'en Xispa in Tivissa. The first exploration seems to correspond to the GES – CMB (J. Castell, January 1964), who gave it a depth of 12 metres and called it Avenc d'en Xispa, placing it in the municipality of Tivissa. This exploration remained anonymous and when in February 1978 members of the ERE – CEC explored it they called it Avenc de la Cabra and placed it in Vandellós. For this reason the record, with different names, appears duplicated in volume 7 of the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya (1984).
