Small 20 m deep pit in the Morella area (Garraf), discovered and explored by GES – CMB in March 1950.

Characteristics

Location

Going from Campgràs to the Morella along the track (in very poor condition and closed) that crosses the head of the Fondo de les Terradelles (on the boundary with the old landfill), one must continue to near the left-hand bend where the path that climbs to the summit of the Morella starts. A few metres before, on the left, a path sets off which after a few metres brings us to the doline where the cavity is found.

Description

Morphology

On the edge of the doline open the two entrances of the pit, which connect with a single shaft 15 metres deep with its base occupied by clastic products. Between them small conduits are formed that allow one to descend to the point of maximum depth (level – 20 m).

Other details

The origin of the cavity must be the product of the corrosion phenomena of the waters infiltrated through the upper doline and its subsequent evolution masked by clastic and chemolithogenic processes.

J. Montoriol theorised about a genesis prior to the evolution of the doline from an ancient thalweg of a pre-current relief, whereby the avenc de l'Infern could be the oldest subterranean form in Catalonia. The evolution of speleogenetic knowledge does not support this old theory.

History

Discovered and explored by members of GES – CMB in March 1950.
