Characteristics

Location

Leaving the Serra d'Almos via the Mas de l'Arany, follow the track (Camí del Mas de Capcir) that first runs parallel to the barranc de Tartacó and then enters the barranc del Mas de Capcir. Shortly after, the ravine describes a large meander to avoid the Roca de Torra and a little further on a ravine can be seen that descends from the SE from the Mola de Capcir; this is the barranc del Solà del Migdia (or de l'Espadella), which must be ascended, and halfway along its course, about 20 metres above the right slope, although with difficulties due to the great amount of vegetation, the cavity is found.

Description

Morphology

The cavity begins with a first pit 12 metres deep, whose floor has a strong slope and drops into a new vertical, this one of 24 metres. At its bottom, a narrow passage leads to a chamber of 18 x 8 metres. A slope gives way to a small chamber located at a lower level and where the deepest point is situated at -42.6 metres.

It seems to be two independent concavities (the shaft zone excavated through joints and the lower chamber on a bedding plane) that, once they evolved, came to join.

Speleothems

The chamber is beautifully decorated with a profusion of stalactites and different floor formations.

Hydrology

Notably a gour full of water at certain times of the year.

History

It seems that this cavity had been explored by a series of residents of the Serra d'Almos, among them Mr. Ramon Pena, who accompanied members of the ERE-CEC who explored and surveyed it on 7 September 1975.
