Characteristics

Location

From the picnic area of the Margalef reservoir, you must go to the bridge that crosses the reservoir, just after the outlet of the barranc de la Taverna, and follow the path parallel to the reservoir for about 400 m, where you will find on your right a turnoff that climbs directly towards the Auferí area. It should be said that the first 300 m of the climb are very steep and with little visibility due to the vegetation, although afterwards it is somewhat flatter, while in front you can make out a hill where almost at its summit most of the cavities are found.

You must climb up to a ridge where you will already see on the other slope the upper part of one of the barrancs de la Taverna. We will continue up towards the aforementioned hill (915 m) and once at the summit we will descend by the SW slope and soon find on our left a small depression where there is a holm oak and some buckthorns, in the middle of which is the entrance of the avenc de l'Arboçar (or Arbocer). It is very close to a waymarked path.

Description

Morphology

A small entrance hidden among the bushes that allows entry through a short drop into a descending gallery that immediately leads to a 5 m pit; a few metres before the end it meets an upper gallery that is slightly ascending, from which the connection emerges with a small side chamber almost divided in two by the lithogenic formation.

Progression

Entry through a short drop into a descending gallery that immediately leads to a 5 m pit; a few metres before the end it meets an upper gallery that is slightly ascending, from which the connection emerges with a small side chamber.

History

Discovered and explored by members of the SAS – CG Barcelonès during the campaigns they carried out in this area of the Montsant during the years 1966 and 1967.

In this area of the Auferí, the people of the SAS – CGB also explored a few more cavities, all of them of very small dimensions: Avenc del Camí; Avenc Petit; Avenc del Senglar; Avenc del Turó and Avenc Cobert, and given the very little data they provide we have chosen not to catalogue them.
