A 10-metre-deep pit in Tamarit that connects with a cave open to the sea.

Characteristics

Location

In the large urbanisation between Móra and Tamarit is the carrer de la Foixarda. Halfway along it, at a bend, there is an information panel with a map of the area. From here we take the indicated path that leads towards the castle of Tamarit. After crossing a pine grove, we come out in front of the cliff. Here, we leave the route that leads to the castle and turn west following a faintly marked path. In less than a hundred metres and only 5 metres from the cliff edge we will find the entrances of the pit.

Description

Morphology

Pit with two entrances that lead into a single 9.90-metre shaft. Halfway down, the shaft opens into the ceiling of a hall open to the sea with an approximate floor plan of 10 x 10 metres. At the point where the rope touches the water, there is a depth of 1.60 metres. The cavity develops in the reef calcarenites of the Miocene.

History

We do not know the background, although at the entrance there are some very worn graffiti where one can make out: “SIRE DE SANTS”, “1991” and “AVENC CAMPOS”. Taking into account that one of the names that appear in the survey of the Avenc de la Cala de la Móra and in other cavities of the area is Juan Campos (published in Excursionisme nº 280, 1999 and nº 299, 2001) it seems quite likely that this is the person who named the pit, although this particular cavity remained unpublished in later works. Since we do not know whether it has a popular toponym, we have respected what was painted there.
