Grotte e abissi nell'unità geologica Muntanyes de Begur

The Muntanyes de Begur are a unit of granite relief on the coast of the Baix Empordà, with sea caves and boulder caves along the coastline. They form part of the Serralada Litoral and contain 39 cavities: 35 caves and 4 pits, with a total passage of 1709 m and a maximum depth of 48 m. The lithologies present are granite (27), limestone (8), sandstone (3) and conglomerate (1).

The most notable cavity is Rec Ses Gralles, in Begur, with 446 m of passage and 48 m of depth, a complex structure of open-air sections, superimposed levels, shafts and drops, and 4 accessible entrances. Other significant caves are the Cova d'en Gispert, with 174 m, known since time immemorial and explored speleologically in 1952; the Cova d'Aigua Xelida, of 73 m, in Palafrugell; the Cova de Sa Gavina, of 67 m, explored and surveyed in August 1986 by members of the SIS – CE Terrassa; and Sa Roncadora, of 63 m, with a fissure of 46 m.

Among the deepest cavities are Sa Roncadora, with 27 m; the Bufador de l'Infern, with 15 m; the Cova de la Punta de N'estella, with 15 m; and the Cova del Tabac, with 13 m.
