Zatoya

Horizontal cavity of great archaeological interest that appeared while working on the extraction of stone for the road surface, exposing a small opening through which there is a length of about 150 m, completely horizontal. To the right extends a slope produced by the original entrance, now naturally closed, which contains a sediment about six meters thick and which continues outside for about six meters.

Discovered a little more than 20 years earlier by the drills of the aforementioned quarry, it was the object of various lootings until in the summer of 1975 Excavations and archaeology of the I.P.V. were carried out, with a first campaign of excavations of its deposit. In the second campaign progress has been made in a detailed diagnosis of the cultural personality of each of the great moments of the stratigraphic deposit of Zatoya, assessing its varieties of material typology and attempting to describe the characters of its evolution. Zatoya is one of the most important sites of the entire northern third of the peninsula for knowledge of the obscure period between the end of the Paleolithic (with the Last Glaciation) and the appearance of the new ways of life (pastoral and agricultural) of the Neolithic and Eneolithic.
