Caratteristiche

Località

Manyanet is reached by a 12-kilometre track that begins at kilometre 327 of the N-260 road from Pobla de Segur to el Pont de Suert; this track passes through Xerallo, Les Esglésies and Benés. To reach Fontmentiró you must get to the Borda de Rafel, which can be reached by two routes.

One route starts from Manyanet, continuing along the track, which climbs the slope where the village stands in four zigzags. At the last pronounced right-hand bend, which gives a view of the last houses of the village, we can see a sign painted on the rock indicating that the path is closed at 3 kilometres. We follow the track and for 150 metres it straightens out considerably, although the ground is cemented; the track continues suitable only for all-terrain vehicles, we will cross two small streams; after the second one and after a little more than 800 metres from the path-closed sign, we leave the vehicle. Now we must descend to the Manyanet stream; it is difficult to find the path, but by one way or another one reaches the Borda de Rafel, which is right next to the river.

The other route starts from Manyanet; you must look for the renovated building of the old school, from behind which an old path starts that descends a little and then turns behind the house and heads up the valley. In about 45 minutes it brings us to the Borda de Rafel. Once at the Borda, the stream must be forded, which in the dry season presents few problems. Once on the other side of the river, we find the barranc des Hortons, where a short stretch can be climbed if no water is flowing down it, and then one enters the hazel groves on our left, climbing straight up looking for the most practicable place. We continue climbing until we reach the same height as the track on the other side of the valley. We will cross a small clearing in the pine forest, and on our right, at a point where a passage is hinted at, we reach the mouth of the spring.

Descrizione

Morfologia

It is a spring that in dry seasons still retains a permanent pool of water 2 metres from the entrance, which is the lowest point of the cavity. This pool is about 10 metres long and 0.50 metres deep. At 20 metres a blind ascending ramp is left; from there one ascends by successive steps, with small pools of water. On the floor and walls we find sharp edges, produced by the erosion of the rock. In the rest of the gallery stretch until reaching the flowstone one moves comfortably upright, but through the circulation conduit, for this reason, it is uncomfortable to drag oneself along.

From the flowstone, where the 2 metres must be climbed, a stretch begins with a section of approximately 0.80X0.80 metres; after about 50 metres the progression is between slabs of strata, and in parts, through clean circulation conduits. The exploration ends at a slab behind which a step was sounded.

Storia

Explored by Lluís Filbà (SE-ACE Mataró) on 23 September 2005, he returns to the cavity again in October 2008; on both occasions he explores about 50 metres of passage up to a flowstone that seems to bar the way.

In July 2012 he returns together with Àlber Filbà, finding the continuation through a gallery hanging about two metres to the left of the flowstone. The 2012 exploration ended at a slab behind which a step was sounded.

When carrying out the survey in October 2013, the point where the exploration ended in 2012 was covered with water.
