Caratteristiche

Località

On the serrat de les Paparres, below the camí nou de Sant Jeroni and only 40 m in a straight line from it, shortly after having left the camí dels Pollegons on the left. To get there, from the pla de les Taràntules (upper station of the funicular de Sant Joan) we will take the camí nou de Sant Jeroni and follow it for about 15 minutes until at a collet we leave on the left the path that descends in the direction of the Pollegons. About 40 metres further on we will leave the path on the right and go down to look for the small pit. It is not far, but depending on which way we go we may get tangled up.

Descrizione

Morfologia

Entrance 3 m long by a maximum width of 80 cm, with an upper lip slightly raised with respect to the lower one. It gives way to a single vertical pit 6 m deep. More or less elliptical plan of 3.5 m by 1.5 m maximum width. Relatively flat stony floor.

Storia

The first reference to this small pit is found in a writing made by pare Guiu Camps in January 1969. It consists of 8 typewritten pages collecting Montserrat cavities. Of the few data it provides, it says, apparently from someone else's reference, that it is about 9 m deep and in a somewhat imprecise location. In 1974 it is included in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Montserrat (Speleon – 21) compiled by members of the GE Pedraforca, but without providing data.

After many years, Angel Juste, former guard of the ermita-refugi de Sant Benet, locates the cavity and tells his replacement at the refuge, l'Efrén. He, together with l'Eliseo López, explores it and a video is posted on Youtube.

It is not, however, until early September 2023 that Ferran Cardona and Josep Cuenca are able to locate it and do the cataloguing work.

Note from Espeleoindex: In 1978, the colleague Joan Borràs made a compilation of the activities of the GES – CMB during its first 30 years of existence (1948-1978) by making an extract of the Group's activities book. This typewritten work was never published but different photocopies were made and distributed among friends and acquaintances.

In this list of activities it is recorded that in the month of May 1976 members of the GES explored the Pouetó de les Salamandres within the work of the third volume of the Catálogo espeleológico de la provincia de Barcelona, which was to include the Serra de l'Obac and Montserrat. Since this volume never saw the light, we do not know which cavity they were referring to. We believe we remember that at some point they commented that it was a small pit excavated totally or partially artificially. We therefore intuit that very possibly it was a concavity that had nothing to do with the Pouetó de les Salamandres.
