Descrizione
Morfologia
The cavity follows, along its entire route, a descending ramp. In the first metres the ceiling is quite high and the floor is covered with blocks. It then continues through a much narrower opening, the ceiling drops notably and the gallery gains in width. The floor is partially occupied by pebbles. The lowest point, very variable depending on the season, is occupied by one or two pools of water. There are reports that in times of low water it has been possible to progress some 3 or 4 metres further along a gallery of reduced dimensions and it even seems that (GIE, 1965) at some point it might be possible to reach a lower chamber and an ascending conduit.
In the dry season (August 2021) it was possible to descend some 3 m more until reaching a small wider chamber that could be the one mentioned by the GIE in 1965. An underwater incursion (April 2014) allowed advancing a few metres more but the ceiling drops considerably and becomes a laminar passage that seems to have continuity.
Idrologia
Everything seems to indicate that it is an occasional spring in a trop-plein regime, related to the different springs found at a lower level.
The extreme violence and great flow with which the water emerges from the mouth on some occasions, as well as the non-immediate dependence on torrential rains, allows supposing the establishment of a normal emission mechanism with another typically vauclusian spring.
N. Llopis Lladó believed that the absorption zone should be located in the dolines of the Planells de Llaberia.
Progressione
On 26.04.2014 members of the GE Badalona decided to carry out an underwater exploration of the sump at its high level (-9 m.), this incursion was carried out by Jordi Yherla advancing some 25 metres along the main conduit and 15 m more along a branch, until the narrowness of the conduit made it impossible to continue.
It would not be until 31.08.2021 that they return to the cave in the dry season, with the water level lower, in order to progress a few metres more and reach a wider small chamber where they find the sump again. A new survey is made.
Storia
Known since time immemorial. According to J. Ferraté the first exploration was carried out in 1909 and they returned in 1915 (Agrupació Excursionista de Reus), making a simple sketch and observing notable differences in the final section, compared to the visit six years earlier.
Ferraté himself explains that: Sometimes the local people have covered the mouth with large stones, but the intense force of the water has cleared it again, as if mocking those toys of men and it is undoubtedly because of what we might call the madness of that cavity that it has been baptised with the name of La Fou (sic). A little further on he says: ...of the mad cavity, Curious is the etymological origin that Ferraté makes, confusing the toponym fou (throat of a pit; gorge; spring; fountain) with the French word fou (mad).
Around 1934 or 1935 it is visited and surveyed by N. Llopis Lladó (Club Muntanyenc Barcelonès).
During the 1960s it was much visited by different speleological groups, being able to observe the different changes in the water level.
