Caratteristiche

Località

From the town of Sant Martí Sarroca, follow the BV-2129 turnoff that leads towards the complex formed by the castle and the church of Santa Maria. After the first kilometre, on a sharp bend we find, on the right, a track that leads towards the font de la Salut and l'Artiga; we follow this cemented track, cross the riera de Pontons, pass by can Carbó and further on leave the masia de l'Artiga on the left.

From here the track is dirt in good condition, and it climbs up towards the bosc de l'Artiga. We pass under a high-voltage power line, beside it we have a tower, we leave a turnoff on the right and continue level until we reach the height of a second tower of the power line; here you must leave the vehicle and continue on foot.

Descrizione

Morfologia

Cova nº 1 dels Bous: It measures 13 m deep, 39 m wide and an average height of 2 m. The floor is flat and dusty.

Cova nº 2 dels Bous: In reality it is a rock shelter, it measures about 5 m deep, 11 m wide and a height of 3 m that decreases towards the interior.

Progressione

From the track you must go down to the foot of the tower, we leave this behind and a few metres further down a path begins, on the right, marked with yellow paint, which descends and immediately we find some fixed ropes that are of great help; after the descent the path climbs steeply again, we again find fixed ropes and a chain. This equipped path reaches the entrance of the caves. In total we have been 10 to 15 minutes.

Storia

Known since time immemorial. Mentioned for the first time in 1893 by Josep Castellanos in the account of an excursion through the area of Torrelles de Foix to Santes Creus (Butlletí del CEC nº 9: 71-75).

He erroneously places it in Torrelles de Foix instead of Sant Martí Sarroca, an error that had persisted until now.

We do not know the origin of the toponym of the cova dels Bous, since due to its location and complicated approach it is almost impossible that it was used as shelter for livestock.

From then on it appears mentioned in numerous publications about the Penedès, especially of an archaeological nature. Despite this, it is not until 27-11-2018 that it is visited by members of the Espeleo Club Muntanyenc Barcelonès (J. Ferreres, H. Moreno and G. Aymamí) who carry out the pertinent cataloguing work.
