Caratteristiche

Località

The coves del Mu are located to the north of the Carbonera ridge, in the cliffs that drop down to the gorge of the Segre river, in the municipality of Alòs de Balaguer. This cavity opens in Upper Cretaceous materials, since these are nodular-looking limestones belonging to the Campanian.

Access is from the upper part of the village of Camarasa, from where a track suitable for all kinds of vehicles starts and will take us to the ermita de Sant Jordi, on the Carbonera ridge. From here, and now on foot, we will follow the track northwards, leaving some corrals and storehouses on our left and further on the avenc de Sant Jordi. When the path begins to descend and turn to the left we must leave it. Cross-country we will head towards the turó del Mu, which is on our right. Once we have reached the hill we will continue in a north-easterly direction in order to reach the cliffs above the Segre river. Once we are at the cliffs we will follow them eastwards. After a short while we will see that a ravine forms on our right; we must continue between the cliff and the ravine until the point where it plunges over the crag. The caves are at the base of the cliff on the hydrographic left. In order to be able to see the entrances from above one must go to the other side of the ravine.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The cavity has four entrances: two of 2.5 x 1.5 metres located at the base of the ravine and two more of smaller dimensions located in the very middle of the north face of the cliff, below the ledge where we made the descent. The entrance closest to the ravine's drop is an 11-metre-long passage which, three metres along its course, already has the characteristic keyhole shape. This gallery has a passage that connects with the gallery of the neighbouring cave, which by means of two narrow passages leads to the two entrances in the cliff.

Idrologia

The cavity appears to have acted as a spring.

Progressione

To reach the caves we must go to some rock outcrops on the hydrographic left of the ravine and near the cliff; at this point a rigging begins for descending by abseil, with a first section that places us on a small ledge where a handrail is rigged to the left and a new abseil will leave us at the entrance of the caves. For the descent a 40-metre rope is needed for the first section, 20 metres for the handrail and 30 metres for the second section.

Storia

Although the entrances had already been located by Francesc Rubinat at the end of the 80s of the last century, due to the difficulty of access, it was not until September 2003 that Francesc and Marc Rubinat rigged an abseil on the crag to access the caves and explore them. The cave's record card was not published until 2008.
