Descrizione

Morfologia

This cave, about 200 metres long, appears as two sections of a single gallery that was cut by widening works on the N-260 road, which links Puigcerdà with la Seu d'Urgell.

The westernmost entrance (Cova gran de la Quera: 134 m.) leads, after passing a boulder zone, to a small chamber that soon loses height and forces a short crawl. The gallery widens again, allowing passage more or less comfortably. The final part narrows until it can no longer be passed. A short upper gallery allows a few more metres of progress before reaching the end.

The easternmost entrance (Cova petita de la Quera: 62 m.) gives access to a wide gallery. This gallery ends at the top of a sloping ramp where blocks and recently deposited earth are visible, probably due to the effect of the blasting when widening the road.

Concrezioni

Notable is the almost total absence of reconstructional phenomena in this part of the gallery. On the other hand, it is interesting to observe the erosive effects on the stratification of the host rock and its different degrees of competence.

On the right a passage climbs up that is soon covered with concretion, especially on the left side and on the floor. Small flows, gours and an occasional column give a certain charm to this stretch of the cave.

Idrologia

There is possibly a link between the nearby font Cerdana and this cave. The existence of an underground water circulation network in this area is shown not only by the flow emerging from the font Cerdana, but also by the existence, about two kilometres further E, of an important water bottling plant.

Progressione

The westernmost entrance (Cova gran de la Quera: 134 m.) leads, after passing a boulder zone, to a small chamber that soon loses height and forces a short crawl. The gallery widens again, allowing passage more or less comfortably. The final part narrows until it can no longer be passed. A short upper gallery allows a few more metres of progress before reaching the end.

The easternmost entrance (Cova petita de la Quera: 62 m.) gives access to a wide gallery. On the left and after a few metres, one can exit to the outside again. On the right a passage climbs up that is soon covered with concretion, especially on the left side and on the floor.

Storia

Discovered during the widening works on the N-260 road in the mid-1980s, when the nearby crag was cut. Located in March 1987, while the works were still ongoing, by members of the Espeleo Club de Gràcia, who explored and surveyed it. Inside they were able to observe, engraved in the mud, the initials of the GIRES of Sant Esteve Sesrovires (possibly from the group they had in Cerdanya) and who in principle would have been those who made the first exploration around the year 1986.
