Descrizione

Morfologia

Made up of a single gallery about 35 metres long, a width that ranges between 4 and 8 metres and with a very raised ceiling, reaching 23 metres high. At its end there is a much narrower extension, but with a very steep slope that climbs up to the ceiling of the chamber. The total route is 54 metres and the elevation change is +23 metres.

Progressione

From Roses we will head towards Cala Montjoi and continue in the direction of Platja de Jóncols; on reaching Coll de Canadell we will leave the vehicle, and continue on foot along the northern path that heads towards Cap Norfeu and skirts the bay of Jóncols. After 650 metres we will find the Cova de les Ermites on the right of the path; we will continue along the path for 240 metres and on the right we will find a small trail that climbs up towards the Cau del Lliri; we will leave this on the left and follow the trail until we pass to the other side of the mountain, where we will find the path that climbs to the Torre de Norfeu; we will follow the descending path for about 225 metres, at which point we will have to leave it to head towards a small cove, “el Racó de la Galera”, where the cave is located. Care must be taken with the state of the sea, since in a storm the entrance can become very dangerous.

Storia

Very probably these sea caves were already known in ancient times by the sailors of the area, but the first speleological reference of which we have news is that of the exploration and survey carried out by S. Delclós of the CE Empordanès in 1972.
