Caratteristiche

Località

The cave is located in Vespella de Gaià (Tarragonès). From Altafulla, take the T-202 road towards la Nou de Gaià and continue towards Salomó. Before reaching this village, between kilometres 9 and 10, the road has a straight section and in the central area, almost opposite the railway tunnel, on the right-hand side of the road there is a small cistern at the beginning of a vineyard; cross this to its easternmost end and from there climb up the left-hand slope of the torrent that we have followed along the vineyard. At the top of the slope and heavily overgrown, the small entrance of the cave is found. From it, the mas del Manou can be seen at a bearing of 283º.

The torrent bed that divides the Serra Alta in two has a firebreak and below it there is an underground natural gas pipeline.

On the ICGC maps, near its location, they mistakenly mark Cova Fonda, which we believe refers to the Cova Fonda de Salomó.

Descrizione

Morfologia

A circular entrance 0.7 metres in diameter gives way to a vertical drop of approximately one metre, which connects through a low-roofed passage to the main chamber of the cavity, about 12 metres long by 2-3 metres wide. Its floor is almost flat with very localized spots covered by debris, the product of a minor clastic process.

At the end of this chamber begins a narrow gallery, slightly descending and with a small drop that leads to a tiny room where the cave ends.

Storia

The first record of this cavity is that of the exploration carried out on 13 April 1898 by the doctor and delegate member of the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya in Rodonyà, Pau Teixidor. During the exploration he made some small test pits, finding bone and pottery remains.

It is not until 23 July 1910 that a new exploration carried out by Marià Faura and Pere Mir becomes known.

From this date we have no knowledge of any further visit, except for that of the people who hid during the war, according to what a very old man from la Nou de Gaià who accompanied members of the SIE-CEA in the summer of 1980 explained, and who themselves returned to survey it in February 1981.

Faura (1911) assigned it the synonym of Avenc de la Serralta.
