Caratteristiche

Località

On the BV-5202 road from Sant Julià de Vilatorta to Vilalleons, upon reaching kilometre 3.35 we will follow a track on the left, which in about 500 metres will bring us to the Gili farmhouse. Just past the farmhouse, the track makes a sharp bend to the right to head towards the old hay barn, currently restored as a dwelling. Right at the bend, a path sets off passing behind this building and heading NE; after covering about 450 metres we will reach a crossroads, we will take the path on the left heading W, as if turning back, and after about 50 metres in the middle of a forest clearing we will find the mouth of the cavity. On this last stretch of the route and a few metres to the right of the path, we find a large rock in the shape of a giant mushroom.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The cavity is entered through a one-metre-deep collapse entrance; at this point a gallery begins with a gentle downward slope, whose height increases as we advance, until it has a section one metre wide by 1.6 high. At approximately 20 metres along we find a low muddy passage; once on the other side the gallery becomes wider. At this point we find a parallel gallery that connects at different points with the main gallery. From this point we descend half a metre in a W direction, placing ourselves in the upper part of a gallery 6 metres high, descending to the bottom opposite; we will continue for about 10 metres until we find a ramp full of debris which we climb for about 4 metres, the gallery continues towards the S with a section of 2x1.5 metres, which gradually narrows until it closes at 15 metres along as a result of the debris that forms the ramp. (It is possible that at this point there was formerly another entrance).

Concrezioni

Large curtains of roots hang from the ceiling.

Storia

The cavity has been known since time immemorial; it is already cited by M. Faura i Sans in 1909 in the Recull Espeleològic de Catalunya. Very close to the mouth, about 40 metres away, we find a sandstone rock with a curious shape of a giant mushroom; this rock is known by different names, Bolet del Gegant, Pedra del Gili, Bolet de Pedra. It is this rock that gives the cavity the name Cova del Gegant. On 25 September 1960 it is located and explored by José Castell, Josefa Rius, Enrique Mola and José Rojas of the Club Excursionista de Gràcia, who rename it with the name Cova de la Vall. In the mid-sixties, a man from Vic named Eduard Clos rediscovers this cave, as well as other cavities in the area. In 1970 members of the SIE del CE Àliga carry out the exploration and survey of this cavity, as well as that of others in the area.
