Località

At km. 11 of the TV-7044 road (from la Riba to Farena), a track begins that leads to the hamlet of la Bartra. From here one must take a turnoff onto a track that heads SW and ends at the Mas del Rat. Halfway along, on the right, the mouth of the cave can be seen in the cliff.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The entrance hall is 10 metres wide by 18 deep, having been used as a livestock pen, with part of the dry-stone walls still preserved. At the NW end we find the continuation of the cavity, a gallery that continues in a SE-NW direction which, after a passage of some 28 metres, connects at different points with another entrance hall that connects with the outside, of similar characteristics to the entrance one. Below it, a group of galleries and chambers develops in parallel with a general shift towards the N. The surveys do not reflect the cave's vertical drop.

Storia

The first report of this cavity was provided by S. Vilaseca and J. Iglésies who, accompanied by Manuel Mata, of Reus, explored it in 1927. They immediately began archaeological excavations, finding, among other material, a series of human skeletons. We have no further reports until members of the GIEM (Montblanc) visited and surveyed it towards the end of the 1960's.
