Caratteristiche

Località

Driving along the BV-2131 road from la Pobla de Claramunt to Carme, about 150 metres from the bridge at km. 4 before reaching the latter town, there is a turn-off to the left leading to the hamlet of les Esplugues de Carme. Once you reach the first house there is a path leading to the foot of the cliff; passing under the Cova del Temple, and about 7 metres up on the wall, is the Cova del Pou. A few metres further on you reach the cova del Bressol along a narrow but short ledge with no difficulty.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The entrance, about 3 x 2 metres, gives way to a spacious chamber 11 metres long by 6 wide, with a flat, dusty floor. Just above the bressol a narrow hole (forat estret) opens up that connects with a round little room with a step in the middle, which once descended places us in some short galleries, one of which comes out again into the main chamber. From the right side of the chamber a crawlway leads off, and after dragging ourselves through it, it opens into a new little room that connects with a second one, where the cavity ends. We find a short crawlway that leads outside, just onto a ledge that will allow us to reach the cova dels Forats.

Concrezioni

Almost at the back, on the right, there is a magnificent dry gour which, by its shape and size, looks like a cradle.

Progressione

From the right side of the chamber a crawlway leads off, and after dragging ourselves through it, it opens into a new little room that connects with a second one, where the cavity ends. We find a short crawlway that leads outside, just onto a ledge that will allow us to reach the cova dels Forats.

Altri dettagli

P. Calonge recounts a legend according to which a mother raised her child inside this dried-up pool, fleeing from the condemned man who inhabited the cova del Pou (there is another legend about this in the cova del Pou).

Storia

Known since time immemorial.

The oldest data from a description of these caves are due to the Piarist P. Calonge, who visited them on 12 July 1885 and made a careful description of them, as well as naming each cavity with a particular name: Temple, Pou, Bressol and Forats.

They were later visited by Font i Sagué and by Almera, without much publicity. This came at the hands of Marià Faura i Sans who, on 14 September 1907, accompanied by Dr. Colomines, his nephew Timoteu Colomines (then president of the Club Muntanyenc) and the owner of Mas Guineu and of the land where the caves are located, made a visit, leaving a record of the writings by P. Calonge.

For years the caves have been visited by a multitude of people (especially the Cova del Temple, as it is the most accessible), some without many scruples when it came to maintaining their integrity.

It is not until the summer of 1973 that members of the GE Pedraforca became interested again and made a topographic survey of the four cavities, naming them Coves de les Esplugues and numbering them from 1 to 4, from the westernmost to the easternmost.

Finally, F. Cardona published in 1989 a documented work on the complex of cavities, with new surveys and other data, the product of visits made with colleagues from the Espeleo Club de Gràcia.
