Caratteristiche

Località

A little over one kilometre east of Horta de Sant Joan is the convent de la Mare de Déu dels Àngels, better known popularly as the convent de Sant Salvador because of the stay made there by this Franciscan friar. From the left side of the convent (East), take the level path that passes along the foot of the cliff; on reaching the cave this path rises slightly in steps. The route takes about 10 minutes.

The mountain of Santa Bàrbara forms part of a series of Oligocene conglomerate reliefs that act as a divide between the massif del Port and the Depressió de l'Ebre.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The cavity is inside a rock shelter half walled up by a stone wall. On both sides two openings lead into the single gallery that forms the cavity, 10.4 metres long and with a height that varies around 1.5 metres.

Altri dettagli

Inside the rock shelter there is an image of Sant Salvador protected by a grille.

Storia

Known since time immemorial. Legend says that Sant Salvador made the small spring flow by striking it three times with his staff.

The only purely speleological reference we know of is the one recorded by members of SIRE – UEC Sants, who visited and surveyed it in October 1980.
