Caratteristiche

Località

Located at Cap de Creus (Cadaqués). From Cadaqués you must go to the Cap de Creus lighthouse; from there you must descend in a SE direction along a signposted path that leads towards the Punta de s'Infern.

The cavity is included within an area protected as an Integral Natural Reserve (RNI), in this case the Cap de Creus one, the highest protection category in Catalonia. In these RNIs it is only permitted to walk along expressly signposted itineraries in order to guarantee the conservation of the endangered species that live there, as well as their geological heritage.

Access to and return from the cavity may only be made along expressly signposted itineraries. The cavities may only be accessed with an express authorisation from the managing body of the Natural Park, which must be obtained beforehand.

Descrizione

Morfologia

Today it is simply a rock bridge 35 metres in length resulting from the destruction of part of the roof of the pre-existing cave; it remains a phenomenon as interesting as it is spectacular and for this reason it constitutes a point of interest on walking itinerary no. 15 (geological) of the Natural Park.

Marine erosion cavity, excavated taking advantage of one of the faults that orient the coves of Cap de Creus.

Progressione

Access from land must be made through the roofless section by means of an 11-metre vertical drop.

Altri dettagli

We do not know of any survey of the cavity.

Storia

Known since time immemorial by fishermen and local people. It appears to already feature on a map of the Principality from the 17th century (Boscano, 1687). Cited in all the old catalogues, beginning with Madoz (1850), Casiano del Prado (1864), Puig y Larraz (1896), Font i Sagué (1897), etc.

For some years it has also been very well known to kayakers, divers and lovers of hidden places.

Lately it is also frequented by enthusiasts of jumping into the water from increasing heights; the shallow depth of the innermost point has already caused accidents due to the lack of sufficient water cushion.
