Caratteristiche

Località

From the Port de la Selva we will take the GI-613 road towards the coll de Perafita; after travelling a couple of kilometres from this village, specifically at kilometre point 5.4, we will find the cavities on the left of the road, about 45 metres away from it; cave no. 1 can be seen from the road.

The coordinates in the record correspond to cave no. 1. From this one, if we follow the small cliff towards the W for about 30 metres, we will reach cave no. 6 (ETRS89-31T-X:517342;Y:4685372;Z:32msnm), having passed on the way caves no. 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Back at cave no. 1, if we go around the small cliff towards the E, we will soon reach cave no. 8 (ETRS89-31T-X:517402;Y:4685375;Z:30msnm), having passed on the way what remains of cave no. 7.

Cave no. 9 is located just in front of cave no. 8, on the other side of the stream and slightly higher.

Descrizione

Morfologia

It is a group of tiny cavities excavated in sandy material. There are nine cavities, some of them artificially modified; the largest reaches 8 metres of passage, while others are practically gone due to erosion.

  • No. 1: semicircular plan and rounded ceiling; it is about 6 metres in diameter.
  • No. 2, 3 and 4: practically vestigial, completely eroded.
  • No. 5: it has two entrances, one facing S and the other facing W, with 7 metres of passage.
  • No. 6: it has 8 metres of passage.
  • No. 7: practically vestigial; the slab that served as its ceiling fell due to erosion.
  • No. 8: it has two parallel entrances, communicating inside, with 7 metres of passage.
  • No. 9: about 3 metres deep.

Storia

Cavities known in the area since time immemorial.

The sand deposits of les Cavorques were described by Llopis Lladó in 1946, who interpreted them as marine formations (beaches). A similar interpretation was made by Carreras (1973). Recent studies indicate that it is a group of deposits of aeolian origin that forms the only example of fossil climbing dunes, with a low degree of cementation, in our country. Its conservation presents, among others, a high didactic interest in the branch of sedimentology.
