Località

From Ridaura to the vicinity of Olot, the Ridaura stream follows a roughly E-W direction, finally taking a S-N direction at the height of the mas de les Feixes. The cavity is located in the area where the stream changes direction, to the right of it and about two metres above the stream bed and near the line where the flows of Montsacopa and La Garrinada come into contact.

Morfologia

The cave consists of a single gallery 18 metres long oriented E25N. The easternmost mouth measures 4x1.5 metres and the western one 5x2.5 metres. Between both mouths, the ceiling descends until reaching 0.5 metres in height.

The cavity has the particularity of being the only cavity in Catalonia developed in volcanic materials, although its genesis has nothing to do with that of classic volcanic tubes; rather it seems to be a short circuit of the wide meander that the Ridaura describes at this point.

Storia

Despite being the only cave in volcanic materials in Catalonia and known since ancient times by the people of the region, the first mention in which the cavity appears is in the cartographic guide of the Garrotxa (Ed. Alpina 1973) thanks to the information provided by members of the ERE – CEC (Raventós, Escolà and others) who had visited it shortly before during campaigns that focused on the Garrotxa, with the participation of members of the Centre Excursionista d'Olot.

In 1983, Joaquim Montoriol and some of his fellow volcano-speleologists visited it and produced an interesting work on the cavity. The SIE – CEA has also made various visits to the cave and the most recent data are those provided by them.
