Caratteristiche

Località

It is located in the Mont-roig range. To reach it, go to the village of Vilanova de la Sal and continue towards the railway halt; turn right towards the ermita de Montalegre. Once at the junction leading to the ermita, follow the track on the right towards the coll de Porta. Before reaching it, there is a cliff on the left; when it begins to lose height a few hundred metres from the coll de Porta, an evident overhang is visible hanging about 60 metres above the ground.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The large entrance leads to a straight gallery that narrows until it becomes a crawlway. After a downclimb, a narrow passage is reached from which a -9 metre pitch is accessed, the end point of this upper level. Halfway along the gallery and among blocks, the access passage to the lower level opens. This follows the same direction as the upper section. At its end, a joint narrows until it becomes impassable.

Progressione

An easy climb is necessary to reach it; there is a via ferrata-style equipment with pitons and a good belay at 35 metres. It is also equipped for descending by double rope.

Storia

Explored by the GELL in May 1995. The caves of this sector of Mont-roig near the coll de Porta appear to have formerly been visited in order to extract sparry calcite (sal de llop), at least this seems to be confirmed by the remains found in the different caves of this cliff. With the exception of Cova Gran. In this one specifically, remains of pottery and crumbs of fabric belonging to sacks were found; signs of calcite extraction are also observed.
