Descrizione

Morfologia

The galleries of the cavity are structured following the fracturing that cuts the conglomerates, mainly in a cross system NNE-SSW and ESE-WNW. The resulting direction of the cavity is approximately NE-SW, following the dip direction of the conglomerates.

We will distinguish five sectors in the description of the cavity:

1-Galeria del Pessebre, Galeria del Quincall and accessoria. These are the closest to the entrances of the cave. The galeria del Quincall is an elbow between two currently closed mouths, the gallery has dimensions of 10x5 metres. The main gallery is a long conduit of dimensions similar to those of the Quincall. Formerly the sediments occupied the section up to a height of 2 metres above the current floor but on opening the current entrance a clearing of the gallery was carried out. At about 200 metres from the mouth the accumulation of sediments forces progress through a narrow vaulted channel that forms the upper part of the gallery, the width can reach 15 metres. A low stretch of 50 metres, partially excavated, leads us to the confluence with the river. In this sector there are small accessoria galleries that move away from the main route: gatoneres del Francolí, l'Eixample and gatoneres de Can Palletes. The latter connect with the base of the shaft opened in the courtyard of Can Palletes, located on carrer St. Antoni and the only access to the cavity until the year 1957.

2-Diàclasis del riu -Somni d'una nit d'estiu- Font Major. Having found the river, in a N direction, the waters enter a network of galleries often flooded. Morphologically two well-delimited sectors can be distinguished. The initial and middle stretches are a network oriented N-S, with two or more parallel galleries linked by open E-W joints. They are narrow and elongated conduits, with bare rock and without sediments. The final stretch has developed taking advantage of the stratification, they are wide conduits with low vaults that lead to the Font Major after passing several stretches that are almost always sumped.

3-Galeria del Llac – Sala del pou de la Biela. The galeria del Llac is the continuation of the cave, going up the course of the underground river, from the previous bifurcation point, the gallery maintains sections of up to 5x3 metres. The depth of the water is variable, from a few centimetres to more than one metre. The course is very calm, often imperceptible. Some small conduits, full of fine sediments, converge coming from the S. The second of them (in the direction of progress) has recovered a certain dynamism from the construction of the dam, since the waters, when they reach the crest of the dam, produce a leak at the tail of the flooded zone that reappears through this gallery. Going up a small slope, we reach the chamber of the pou de la Biela, the largest in the cavity, with more than 15 metres of width, 35 metres of length and heights of 8 metres. The floor is covered with blocks fallen from the ceiling, in the centre of the ceiling opens the pou de la Biela, which constitutes an artificial entrance in this sector of the cave. At the NW end of the chamber is the sump that stopped the explorations until 1985. The current appearance has been modified since the construction of the dam with a wall 8 metres long and 3 metres high.

4-Galeria ERE and accessoria. At the bottom of the sump a short artificial gallery opens that connects with the bottom of the municipal pumping shaft, 21 metres deep. The galeria ERE has average dimensions of 5-6 metres of width and 3 metres of height and the river runs freely there; some blocks fallen from the ceiling are remarkable. Further on we find a network formed by the galeria ERE itself, l'afluent del Casal, la Bessona del fang and the so-called Primer Pis Fòssil. Since the construction of the dam, which raises the water level by about 3 metres, this whole stretch of gallery is usually flooded.

5-Galeria Carulla – La Maranya. It is the natural continuation of the galeria ERE, but with widths of 8 metres and upwards, whereas the height is around one metre, remaining in some points only 25-30 centimetres the distance between the water and the ceiling. In any case some holes in the ceiling of the gallery allow access to an old and higher one, divided into several fragments and which corresponds to the high levels of the Bessona del fang and of the Primer and Segon Pis Fòssil. As in the galeria del Llac, we also find tributaries coming from the S, filled by sediments.

The final conduits (la Maranya) are tangled due to the lack of perspective caused by the low height. The end is a muddy sump that becomes cloudy very quickly and that has made useless the attempts to force it with self-contained diving gear. This point is 65 linear metres from the Pou del Casal, which is a borehole of 18 metres to the water (25.7 metres total depth).

Idrologia

The cave is traversed by an underground river. In the galeria del Llac, the depth of the water is variable, from a few centimetres to more than one metre, and the course is very calm, often imperceptible. Some small conduits, full of fine sediments, converge coming from the S. The second of them has recovered a certain dynamism from the construction of the dam, since the waters, when they reach the crest of the dam, produce a leak at the tail of the flooded zone that reappears through this gallery. In the galeria ERE, the river runs freely. Since the construction of the dam, which raises the water level by about 3 metres, this whole stretch of gallery is usually flooded. In the galeria Carulla – La Maranya, the height is around one metre, remaining in some points only 25-30 centimetres the distance between the water and the ceiling. The end is a muddy sump that becomes cloudy very quickly.

Progressione

Progression through the cave is conditioned by the presence of water and sediments. In the galeria del Quincall, formerly the sediments occupied the section up to a height of 2 metres above the current floor, but on opening the current entrance a clearing of the gallery was carried out. At about 200 metres from the mouth, the accumulation of sediments forces progress through a narrow vaulted channel that forms the upper part of the gallery. A low stretch of 50 metres, partially excavated, leads to the confluence with the river. In the Diàclasis del riu, the waters enter a network of galleries often flooded. In the galeria del Llac, the depth of the water is variable. In the galeria ERE, since the construction of the dam, this whole stretch is usually flooded. In the galeria Carulla – La Maranya, the low height and the lack of perspective make the final conduits tangled. The end is a muddy sump that becomes cloudy very quickly and that has made useless the attempts to force it with self-contained diving gear.

Storia

The cova de l'Espluga has a special relevance both from the historical and prehistoric point of view. The archaeological remains show that man already took refuge there since the Lower Palaeolithic, about 300,000 years ago, since the cave provided him with water and protection. The blocking of the entrance gallery by sediments of Roman times led it to be forgotten by people. It was not until two centuries ago, specifically on 21 April 1853, that the existence of this cavity became known again, when a neighbour made the pou de Can Palletes, and came upon the lateral gallery that leads to the underground river. It seems that for years, groups of young people from the village visited the galeria del Llac up to the Sala de la Biela and the sump.

In his Catàlech (1897), Font i Sagué includes a cavity mentioned in the questionnaire that the CEC had made throughout Catalonia shortly before. It is the cave (currently unknown) called de Pau Oliver or d'Eloi Serret, saying that it is a cavity that gives its name to the village, that they are of great extent and of difficult exploration. Could it be the same cova de l'Espluga?

In any case, it is not until 28 August 1956 that members of the C.E. Pirenaic (Barcelona), made an exploration up to a first sump that they could not bypass. Weeks later the explorations continued through the main galleries and through the zone now known as Diàclasis del riu, as well as the connection with the Pou de la Biela The survey carried out and other indications led to deducing the existence of the main entrance blocked for centuries.

On 17 January 1957, the brigades of the Town Council proceeded to open the current entrance. Between the years 57 and 62 some dives were made in the sump of the sala de la Biela, (A. Ballester, ERE-CEC, 1957; Espeleòlegs de Tarragona, 1960; R. Canela, GEB, 1962), calculating to have advanced some 50 metres in the sump. In July 1965 (Subils i Petit, ERE-CEC) they passed the 50 metres of the sump and travelled some 300 metres of galleries on the other side. The death of Subils a few weeks later at the Fou de Bor stopped the planned explorations.

But it is not until the year 1985, that due to a severe drought and with the extraction of water with pumps by the Town Council, members of the ERE, passed the sump without diving material, and were able to explore and survey the galleries until then virgin, upstream, up to another sump that has not been able to be passed.

As a result of the collaboration between the Town Council and the ERE-CEC, a subterranean dam was planned and built between September and October 1986 in the sala de la Biela, which floods a long stretch of the galleries after the sump, and has as its objective the regulation and storage of the flow of the underground river for its later use in the urban distribution network.

In January 1990, in order to improve the use of the underground waters, the Town Council of l'Espluga carried out a borehole of 13 metres depth in a place marked by the ERE-CEC four years earlier. This borehole reaches the cavity in the post-sump sector a few metres before the galeria Carulla and on subsequently checking its position inside the cave, it is confirmed that the closing error in the topographic situation of the cavity is negligible.

The favourable climatological conditions of the summer of 1990 lead the ERE-CEC to organise a new campaign at l'Espluga, thus, on 26 August the connection is made between the Diàclasis del Riu, part of the cova de l'Espluga and the galleries of the Font Major, spring of the system. From 6 September 1990 more than 500 metres of new conduits are explored behind the sifó de la Biela, several attempts are made to pass the current terminal sump of the cavity, but unfortunately the divers, due to the rapid clouding of the waters, do not manage to find the submerged continuation of the cavity.

In 1994 the museum cave was inaugurated in the initial part of the cave, which is fitted out and where tourist visits are organised, adventure visits are also made to the flooded sector.

In 2019, the IPHES of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili de Tarragona again undertook archaeological work at the cave. The archaeologist Josep M Vergés discovered a set of Palaeolithic engravings in the lateral galleries of the Can Palletes zone and 3D survey work was carried out with a scanner from the entrance of the cavity to the confluence with the underground river. This high-resolution survey overlaps with very little margin of error with the previous survey carried out in the years 1985-1990 and directed by Bosch i Inglès of the ERE del CEC.

The new research project also incorporates geological research on the sedimentary record and hydrology with the participation of the KRAS team and new profiles are made with mechanical sounding and new C14 and TL OSL datings.

Taking advantage of the drought period the ERE del CEC makes several explorations, beyond the sump of the sala de la Biela, in the galleries surveyed since the year 1985, but the terminal sump maintains the water level, which prevents going further.

In October 2023 the XXXVIII Jornades científiques de SEDECK are held in Montblanc organised by the ICEK, on the karst in conglomerates. The cova de la Font Major is the main centre of interest.
