Caratteristiche

Località

From Carrer de la Punta del Milà in l'Escala, we will head to the Neus campsite, already in the municipality of Torroella de Montgrí, following the paved track that exists in this section and that leads to l'Estartit. After covering 1300 metres, on the right we find an abandoned quarry where one can park; one must continue ahead about 200 metres where on the right we find the còrrec de les Raimeres; we will follow the path that runs along the còrrec in a W direction, for a little more than 600 metres, where we will find a fork to the left; one must follow this path, which soon becomes steep, then later levels out; after 290 metres from the previous turn-off, we will find a junction to the right; one must follow the path straight on for 75 metres, then turn off to the right through the middle of a wood of kermes oaks; after 70 arduous metres we will arrive at the entrances of the cavity.

Descrizione

Morfologia

Two entrances, one of 1.11×0.47 metres and the other of 2.27×1.10, give access to the respective shafts of -5 metres one and -3.45 metres the one of the larger entrance. This latter shaft continues with two drops of a little more than 0.40 metres each, and by means of a narrow passage enters a small chamber where the other entrance shaft also converges. In the ceiling we find three domes more than 3 metres high, which almost reach the surface. On the NE side of the chamber we find a narrow shaft of 1.70 metres that ends collapsed due to the large quantity of stones there.

Storia

In the report of the campaign carried out by the SIE del CEA in 2007, we observed that the coordinates of the Cau de la Serp placed it only 10 metres from the Cau de les Raimeres.

Later, in vol.4 of the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya (2010), the Cau de les Raimeres appeared published with data provided from the SIE archive of the CEA, where it was placed with coordinates very similar to the previous ones, since they differed from those of the Cau de la Serp by less than 10 metres of distance.

Curiously, in Narcís Arbusé's book “el Montgrí pas a pas” there is a map where the cau de la Serp is also located in the same place.

Fortunately, our colleague Juli Serrano (SIE-CEA), one day when he was searching for the Cau de la Serp, happened by chance to meet Narcís Arbusé on the ground; the latter accompanied him to the place where the cavity really is found, confirming that there was a great difference with the place where everyone located the cavity.
