Caratteristiche

Località

From Senterada you must head to the Pobleta de Bellveí, where you take a narrow road on the right to the estany de Montcortès. From the E side of the lake a tarmac track leads off towards Peracalç; when you reach the junction with the track going to Montsor, take this track on the right, suitable for any vehicle, and after 1.7 kilometres you will reach the flat area where the caves are found. This is on the left of the track; the spot is easily recognised since the track makes a sharp bend to the right and also on the right there is a large temporary pool of water used by animals for drinking.

From here we will cross the track and enter the meadow on the other side, and enter the wood on our right. Without losing height we will try to cross it until we position ourselves on the south-west slope of the Roca de Perauba. We will follow this slope as close as possible to the rocky masses, until we find a large slab of stone resting on some blocks. It is under this slab that the entrances to the cave are found.

Descrizione

Morfologia

A couple of drops bring us into a small chamber; through a fissure we reach the head of the small shaft that leaves us in a gallery. To the south-east of this gallery, descending down a ramp with stone blocks, better secured with a rope, we reach the Sala Gran, the only part of the cave that can be called beautiful, since it is a high-roofed chamber with formations. From this chamber we can descend among blocks and stones in a very precarious state to the deepest zones of the cave.

Concrezioni

The Sala Gran is a high-roofed chamber with formations.

Idrologia

To the right of the track there is a large temporary pool of water used by animals for drinking.

Progressione

To explore the cave no rigging of equipment is necessary. While the survey was being made it was necessary to dig open some sections, such as the gatonera hiperestreta, as well as point (F) and point (D). The exploration is done among unstable blocks.

Storia

On 26 to 30 March 1970 a team from the SIE of the CEA explores the Forat de Montcortès (98 metres) and the Forat del Vicenç (-10 metres). Later, on 6 and 7 March 1976, another SIE team in which some of the members of the previous team take part, explore in the serra de Peracalç, between the estany de Montcortès and Peracalç, three caves of (-30 metres, -11 metres and -7 metres) depth respectively, which they name Forats de la Grata no. 1, 2 and 3; this information remains in the SIE archives but nothing about it is ever published. Very probably they correspond to one of the many holes explored by the GEB in this sector.

In 1980 the GEB begins a series of explorations on this flat area that lies to the N of the roca de Perauba and to the W of the dolmen de Perauba and which the GEB calls pla del campament because it is the spot where they set up camp during the explorations; these would last until 1988. Later they return in September 1994, in July 1995, when they accompany the archaeologists from the department of history of pre-capitalist societies and social anthropology of the UAB, and they return again in November 1999. Over the course of these years, the forest mass has grown considerably, which also complicates the location of the caves.

The cave was known since 1981 but it is not surveyed until 30 October 1988.
