Caratteristiche

Località

It is located at la Riba, in the Muntanyes de Prades.

Along the TV-7041 road from Alcover to Mont-ral, a few metres after the bend at km. 4, a track leaves to the right that leads to the mas and the chapel of Gràcia. Shortly before arriving, the track forks and one must take the right-hand one (possibly restricted access) which passes by the coll de Gràcia and climbs up to the ridge. Before reaching the flat area that heads towards the puig de Marc, the track climbs by means of four very marked hairpin bends, and at the last one, when one reaches the top of the plateau, one must walk westwards towards a nearby hill, where among rocks and surrounded by holm oaks the mouth of the pit is found.

One can also go from la Riba, from the highest part of the village, at the start of the road to Farena, one must take the path that leads to the hill known as Castell d'en Dalmau, passing by the font d'en Pasqual and follow it up to the top of the ridge of the Puig de Marc, where the track that climbs from the mas de Gràcia is found.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The general structure of the pit consists of displaced joints with large block falls. This causes several overlapping levels, which constitute different floors in the same plan projection. Therefore numerous “pseudogalleries” and “pseudoshafts” have originated that complicate the cavity extraordinarily.

Progressione

At the mouth a ramp begins, at the end of which a 12 metre shaft starts. At its base is the main gallery which, following it towards the SE, has a new shaft that descends 16 metres more, but this sector remains obstructed a few metres on at the -31 level.

Again at the base of the entrance shaft and towards the NW there is a ramp that reaches a narrow joint that leads to a lower level. A room covered in guano follows that communicates, climbing over some blocks, with the Sala del Pou de 20. Following the main gallery we find a 5 metre shaft that also communicates with the previous room and, on the other hand, also communicates with the upper part of the so-called Sala de la Verge, which can also be reached via the Pou de 20 and which starts from the room that gives it its name.

A third way leads us to the Sala de la Verge following the main gallery between a chaos of blocks that at some points form considerable ledges. Once at the final point one must continue as if going back, but on a lower level, until reaching this large room, which has, at one of its ends, a small shaft that allows one to reach the -48 level.

Storia

The first news we have of this cavity is that of a brief note appearing in the magazine Cordada where they report that members of the A E Ginesta (Tarragona), A E de Reus and of the Secció de Muntanya de l'ET de Valls carried out the first exploration on 6 May 1956, attributing to it a depth of 72 metres.

We have little more news about this cavity until it was the object of study by a group of members of the ERE – CEC during intense research campaigns in the years 1972/74 throughout the massif of the muntanyes de Prades.

We do not know who, through total ignorance, renamed it avenc del Rat Penat.

On some occasions, we have seen the place name Puig de Marc written as Puig de Març, but it seems incorrect.
