The gouffre de la Besace, in the Tithonian limestones at Savonnières-en-Perthois, descends to -63 m.
Description
Morphology
The gouffre de la Besace begins with a low gallery opened in the working face of the underground quarry of Savonnières-en-Perthois. After 7 metres this gallery leads to a succession of shafts and steps that reach a depth of -49 m. Above the last shaft, a small window allows entry into new shafts down to -63 m.
Hydrology
At -63 m, the water continues along a narrow crawlway for about twenty metres, which then becomes impassable. The water springs at the springs of Cousances-les-Forges.

The Gouffre de la Besace develops in the Tithonian limestones. With the Gouffre de la Sonnette, it is the only cavity in the area to reach the pierre châline, an impermeable marly level (Jaillet, S. (2005) - « Le Barrois et son karst couvert », collection Karstologia mémoires no 12 (ISSN 0751-7688), F.F.S. et A.F.K., Lyon, p. 70, 72, 246, 276).
