Characteristics

Location

Take the track that leaves the Pla d'Ardenya towards the Serra del Mas and the Sotarro. On reaching the first crossroads, follow the left-hand one; when the climb is practically over and the track turns right towards the doline of the Serra del Mas, we must branch off to the left towards the crag. Before reaching it we will find a crevice that blocks our way; following it both to the right and to the left we will come across the different numbers that have been given to the Esquerda del Mas de les Fonts. This one is located towards the right; the three entrances are located after number 6 (SM-7) and before number 7 (SM-11).

Description

Morphology

Of the whole group of crevices at the Mas de les Fonts it is the deepest and the most complex, since two of the entrances connect internally; the third entrance (SM-10) cannot be physically passed through.

Progression

The most comfortable access is through the middle entrance (SM-9), where we find a large chaos of blocks followed by a P12; a false sloping floor leads us to a P16. Through the other entrance, after a 6-metre drop, we find a -37-metre shaft; once at the base, if we continue upwards we will find a narrow shaft that will take us to the deepest point of the cavity.

History

At the end of the 70s the ERE of the CEC explore the various crevices in the area of les Esquerdes del Mas de les Fonts and also cite them as Penya Esquerdada with different numbers to identify them; in this case they cite it with the number 3, but they only access it through the entrance of what years later the SEO would mark as SM-9.

Members of the SEO-CE Vallirana explore and survey it on 27 January 1996, naming it with the abbreviations SM-8, SM-9 and SM-10 and also Penya Esquerdada 8/9/10.
