A 51-metre-deep fissure in Vallirana, narrow and difficult to explore.

Characteristics

Location

Take the track that leaves Pla d'Ardenya towards the Serra del Mas and el Sotarro. On reaching the first crossroads, follow the left-hand one. When the climb is practically over and the track turns right towards the doline of the Serra del Mas, we must turn off to the left towards the crag. Before reaching it we will find a fissure that blocks our way; following it both to the right and to the left we will come across the different numbers that have been given to the Esquerda del Mas de les Fonts. No. 2 is as you reach it on the left, before number 4 and number 1.

Description

Morphology

Its main characteristic is its narrowness: you can hardly turn your body anywhere in the cavity. After descending the first few metres we find a narrow passage.

Progression

The narrowness and the large quantity of stones and earth that fall at the slightest slip make it difficult to explore. Through the narrow passage of the first few metres a strong draught usually blows.

History

Although the first exploration is attributed to en Font i Sagué, and he mentions it in his catalogue, nowhere does he say that he was there. In the article on the Font d'Armena he does not even mention it.

Rafael Amat i Carreras explores it for the first time on 24 August 1925 and names it Esquerda del Mas de les Fonts. He considers that he may have descended to -50 metres, throws a stone and calculates that the fissure descends about 50 metres further.

We have always had doubts as to whether Rafael Amat explored this fissure or whether he was at number 1. From the explanations given, the depth and the fact that number 1 has two entrances and he does not mention it, we think that the fissure he explored was this one.

In 1963, the people of the Club Muntanyenc Barcelonès explored it again and give it a depth of 40 metres. They also call it Esquerda del Mas de les Fonts.

At the end of the 70s it is explored by the ERE del CEC, where they cite the different fissures as Penya Esquerdada, with different numbers to identify them, in this case number 2.

On 2 November 1996 it is explored and surveyed by members of the SEO-CE Vallirana; they name it with the initials SM-1, but they do not manage to descend more than about fifteen metres due to the narrowness, although they did a sounding down to -50 metres.
