Characteristics

Location

On the L-401 road towards Coll de Jou, between kilometres 37 and 38, we find a path on the left that we follow for a little more than 500 metres; at this point, on the crag on the left, the Coves dels Moros can be seen, rising some 20 metres up the wall.

Description

Morphology

It is a group of rock shelters joined laterally, hanging more than 10 metres above the base of the crag and resting on a marly stratum. The deepest point is 11 metres from the entrance. There are the remains of some front walls that were intended to shelter the chamber.

Progression

To reach them, in 1966 there was a wooden ladder 13 metres high. Currently (2013), one must follow the crag for a few metres while watching for a small ledge that continues from the caves to a less vertical point. At that point a rope allows us to climb up to the ledge, where a horizontal steel cable will give us the safety to access the caves. With via ferrata equipment (harness and double lanyard) we advance along the narrow ledge through a very vertical section until reaching the first of the caves, the largest. To advance towards the second and third caves there is no safety cable, only some precarious wires that give more psychological than real safety for crossing over the void. It is possible to descend by abseiling some 25 or 30 metres, since there is an installation inside the cova gran, but it is faster to return by the same path (10 minutes) than to take down the rope and prepare the abseil.

Other details

In the caves one can still see remains of the walls that closed off the rooms.

History

Known since time immemorial, they are already cited by Norbert Font i Sagué in 1897 in the Catàleg Espeleològich de Catalunya.
