Location

Above kilometre 7 of the road from Gósol to Josa del Cadí (C-563), on the left slope of the Torrent de Jovell, shortly before its confluence with the Riu de Josa. Very approximate coordinates.

Description

Morphology

A 4 by 2 metre entrance, giving rise to a descending ramp gallery 28 metres long and about 7 metres wide on average. Halfway along the gallery there is a 2.5 metre drop. A few metres from the entrance, on the left, there is a side gallery of 14 metres that rejoins the main one.

Other details

Small sinkhole on bedding planes evolved by an advanced clastic process.

History

Known to the people of Josa del Cadí for as long as anyone can remember. The only known reference is that of the first speleological exploration carried out by members of the ERE – CEC on 9 April 1966.

It seems that the term Escarols, by which the cavity has always been named, is not correct. On the ICC map it already appears as Esquerols which, according to etymological dictionaries (Alcover-Moll and Joan Coromines), would mean: small bell, from a crossing of esquella and picarol.
