Characteristics

Location

From the centre of Sitges, take the Rambla del Migdia until you reach the B-211 road that skirts the Vallpineda urbanisation. On arriving at the coll de la Creu de Ribes, on the left is the carrer del Bosc d'en Bruguera, in the Sitges neighbourhood of Santa Bàrbara. At the highest point of the street, on the right and a few metres from the municipal boundary, the cave is found in a clearing in the woods.

Description

Morphology

The cavity has three entrances: the main one is a ramp with good access and the other two are simple holes in a ceiling that is thin and apparently not very solid. The cave consists basically of an irregular chamber about 11 metres long by about 2.5 to 3 metres at its widest points.

Other details

The floor of the cavity (1972) was full of excrement from old flocks and of modern cans, papers and plastics. Some test pits from archaeological investigations with unsuccessful results were also detected.

History

Known since remote times. The only data we know are those of the exploration and survey carried out in 1972 by members of the GREV (Grup de Recerques Espeleològiques de Vilanova – Biblioteca-Museu Víctor Balaguer), which served for the Vilanova scholar Joan Virella to write a short article in 1983.

It had been used as a shelter and pen for shepherds in not too distant times.
