A livestock shelter cave in Alcanar (Montsià), with an old dry-stone wall and a ceiling blackened by soot.

Characteristics

Location

The cavity is located in Alcanar (Montsià). From Sant Carles de la Ràpita one must take the track known as Camí de l'Aiguassera (de la Gossera, according to other maps), which crosses the N-340 and continues among crops beside the ravine of the same name. When the path begins to climb toward the Cingle Roig, before the caseta de la Santa, there is a half-lost footpath that climbs toward the Cocó de Quico el Guarda. From here one must go back down toward the ravine to find, with no path or marks, a small cingle where the cavity opens.

Description

Morphology

A shelter cave of regular dimensions. We do not have a survey and therefore do not know the specific dimensions of the cavity.

Speleothems

The ceiling is blackened by soot.

Other details

An old dry-stone wall must have served to pen the livestock inside the shelter cave. The ceiling blackened by soot tells us of shepherds' evening gatherings, sheltered from the night dew.

History

Certainly known for a long time by the good connoisseurs of the Montsià.
